Bait-n-Switching Window Film -How to protect yourself

The title of this blog says it all… “No Way” you say? We receive the occasional call from a homeowner or business owner asking whether or not a particular window film dealer is a genuine “authorized” Hüper Optik dealer. Sadly, from time to time it turns out that “no” the company in question is not an authorized Hüper Optik dealer. “But they are telling me that this is Hüper Optik window film…” exclaims the concerned consumer.

It is commendable to see that consumers are not only educating themselves before making purchasing decisions, but they also have to be more and more proactive in verifying that what they are buying is the genuine article. Unlike an automobile that has easily identifiable logos and design features that verify authenticity, window film with its lack of identifiers, can be easily “changed out” and replaced by a cheaper brand leaving a person vulnerable to the classic “bait-n-switch.” How then can you verify whether or not you are actually getting the very thing that you are paying for?

Hüper Optik sells and warranties its films only through “authorized” Hüper Optik dealers for resale to the general public. A non-Hüper Optik dealer will not be able to provide a warranty for any Hüper Optik products. Some protective checks and balances have been put into place so that consumers can verify that they are in fact getting the authentic product.

First, there is the Hüper Optik box that is clearly marked with the Hüper Optik logo and product identification label. All Hüper Optik window films are packaged in boxes with the Hüper Optik brand logo. An unmarked box would be a “red flag” and you should definitely start asking for more validation if you see installers working out of unmarked boxes.

Second and most significant is Hüper Optik’s change to an “online warranty registration.” This state of the art system not only keeps us up to date with times technologically speaking, but it also makes it very difficult if not impossible for a “non-authorized” Hüper Optik dealer to produce a warranty. Make sure that your authorized Hüper Optik dealer provides you with a Hüper Optik Warranty Activation Card that contains all of the necessary information to activate your window film warranty online. As of July 1, 2010 Hüper Optik will not accept paper warranties that can be easily circulated and duplicated and this will solidify consumer protection through the warranty system. If a dealer cannot produce an online warranty registration card, you have yet another red flag and should phone Hüper Optik to verify that the company you have hired is a in fact a Hüper Optik dealer.

With the availability of low quality films, it is inevitable that unscrupulous companies will attempt to rip off consumers by pulling the bait-n-switch. Why is my house hot?

As the ambient temperature rises we tend to focus on the discomforting result, our house is hot. But why is it hot? A common answer would be that it is summer, and yes, there is a lot of truth to this answer. For one thing, the earth is tilted closer to the sun during the summer and that a lone can be responsible for much of the uncomfortable heat. Your roof can be a huge collector of heat which in turn radiates into your home through the ceiling. Even though your attic might have insulation, that insulation will saturate with radiant heat from your roof. Eventually, the heat that collects in the insulation radiates through your ceiling and into the interior of your home. That is why your air conditioner will turn on at 9pm even though the ambient temperature outside is below your thermostat’s set point.

Is window replacement the answer?

Most glass on existing homes and buildings is tremendously in efficient. How much so? Well, take for instance a typical clear piece of single pane glass. It only has the capacity to reject about 15% of the total solar energy entering the window opening. A more efficient clear double paned window rejects about 25% of the total solar energy which is an improvement but is far from ideal. The large transmission of energy in either of these instances results in higher cooling demands as well as sun damage that results from the heat and high UV transmission through the clear glass. All of this results in increased expenses to cool your home or building, increased repair costs on your HVAC equipment due to the high cooling loads, and costs associated with sun damage to interior furnishings and decor.

The logical move here would be to replace the old windows with something much more efficient. There are plenty of energy saving windows available that are far more efficient than your clear glass. But before you pick up the phone and contact the window company, you may want to consider another option, window film.
